SCUBA System

SCUBA picture gallery

  • Exploded view of a single SCUBA bolometer assembly
  • Arrays in place the on support structure (short-wavelength array is on the left). Note the cut-out edge of the LW array to accomodate the photometric feedhorns.
  • Array support structure (arrays not in place). The boomerang shape accomodates the two arrays. The approximately 14 lbs of copper must be maintained at 100 mK. The ribbon cables carry the bolometer signals from the 100mK stage to the FET first-stage amplifiers at 220 K.
  • Cryostat window and chopper/laser assembly. The chopper allows three-load calibration (sky, ambient, cold) during sky dips. The laser mount provides a means of checking optical alignment with the telescope optics.
  • SCUBA cryostat on telescope frame. Grey box below houses amplifiers, FET and bias battery supplies. 12-inch tape at right side indicates scale.
  • LW feedhorn array, seen face-on. Note the three photometric pixels at the edges. Another view here.
  • SW feedhorn array, containing a total of 91 elements.
