971215 report

Updated track model

One CW inclinometry run was made during yesterday afternoon. (Thanks Jim).

dataset Start time Mean leg temperatures
                     HST start middle end
   inc971214 11:00 2.3 3.8 5.0 C

The plot below shows the difference between the new model and the previous one of 971122, which was taken at a similar mean temperature :

The familiar excursions are seen, and with a sense that toggles for no clear reason, but their increased amplitude, now up to 3", is worrying.

The rms scatters in the difference data for track model parameters (F1, F2, F3) are (0.74", 0.49", 0.32"), similar to the 971122-05 differences. Note also that away from the excursions, the data of 971214 and 971122 are in excellent agreement, with rms scatters of (0.28", 0.18", 0.19") for the azimuth range 80 to 180, and (0.22", 0.21", 0.15") for the azimuth range 260 to 360.

The new model has been installed, but the increased amplitude of the excursions warrants close monitoring. To this end, a weekly regime of inclinometry measurement is in place at JCMT.
