990212 report

Central bearing measurement

After the last measurement ( 990124 ), a new version of TEL_EMPIRICAL.dat was created by Remo and installed on 990127 .

For this test of the new model, Mars was tracked using the SCUBA map16 method, with the empirical corrections left enabled, from :

  • (az,el) = (117/30) at 01:44 HST to (133/46) at 03:08
The pointing residuals are shown below :

Both sets of residuals show systematics throughout this range - which has implications for the pointing model rather than this empirical model. As usual, an idea of the internal noise is given by the rms scatter in the elevation residuals : 0.3" about a straight line fit. The azimuth residuals show no sign above this noise level of the defect, expected at azimuth ~125, and so the new model appears to work well at the 3-sigma = 1" level.
