990305 report

Central bearing measurements - new TEL_EMPIRICAL checks out OK

The last measurement ( 990304 ), confirmed the need to update TEL_EMPIRICAL, and that was done yesterday.

To check the new empirical corrections further tracking was done using the SCUBA map16 method with the empirical corrections left enabled. The following tracking was done :

  • Mars from (az,el) = (120/31) at 00:50 HST to (131/43) at 01:50
  • 3c279 from (az,el) = (105,21) at 22:05 HST to (114,37) at 23:18
The pointing residuals are shown below :

Apart from baseline trends, the pointing residuals show little in the way of systematics, with any structure at the azimuths expected (109 and 125) being at only the 1.0" level. Given the elevations involved (30 and 37, resp), this translates to errors at the horizon of less than 1.2"

The new corrections appear to be valid, at least at these two locations.
