990313 report
Central bearing check
Mars was tracked using the
SCUBA map16 method, with the empirical corrections left enabled, from :
- (az,el) = (120/31) at 00:20 HST to (131/42) at 01:20
The pointing residuals are shown below :
The azimuth residuals show a slight (2"), narrow residual at azimuth 125,
which is on the 'early-azimuth' side of the defect. This implies that the
current version of TEL_EMPIRICAL.DAT, which has a peak-to-peak
amplitude of about 17.8", overcompensates for the defect on that side,
by about 2"/cos(37) = 2.5" at the horizon.
Otherwise the scatter in both daz and del is about 0.8"
which is precisely the seeing reported at that time.
It is probably not necessary to change TEL_EMPIRICAL.DAT on this basis.
The new data are added to the
collection .
