Pointing: update central bearing solution (19990405)

April 05, 1999

A NEW 'EMPIRICAL' SOLUTION WAS INSTALLED AT THE TELESCOPE ON 05-APR-1999 AT 11:22:39.70

Central bearing measurement - 25% lower amplitude

The lastest measurements (990403 and 990404) confirm the decrease in amplitude seen earlier. Since the residuals had increased to ~2.5" at the horizon, a new solution was installed which is the previous one scaled by 75%. While this solution is not optimal in terms of shape, it roughly halfs the residuals. The residuals and old and new solution are shown below.

The plot shows pointing data of 990403 without the empirical correction in green, with at the bottom the residuals (black line) resulting from the empirical solution (black line, top) in use at the time of the measurement. The red lines show the new model and the new residuals: the horizon errors over the range of the CB feature are within ~1.25"".
