Protocols for doing Inclinometry

Protocols for doing Inclinometry

Basic assumptions

  • Inclinometry will normally be executed from JCMT on Fri/Sat/Sun mornings after the end of the normal observing shift.
  • A full CW+CCW run takes about 5.5 hours to complete.
  • Inclinometry may also be done locally during any night when the weather prevents observing.
  • A full CW+CCW inclinometry run must be started before ~04:00 HST if it is to finish before the day crew arrives.
  • It is understood that scheduled daywork has priority after 09:30 HST.

These instructions are for

  • The person starting the inclinometry
    • The telescope drives should be left ON.
    • Email Iain Coulson (i.coulson @ jach.hawaii.edu) and the WL that inclinometry has started: include CW or CCW or CW+CCW info, and start-time.
    • Display 'Inclinometry in progress' sandwich boards at the top of stairs on the observing floor, and at the sign-in board downstairs.

  • A Work Leader subsequently entering JCMT and suspecting inclinometry in progress
    • STOP LOOK LISTEN for ~15 seconds.
    • If antenna/carousel is moving occasionally : beware that a slew between azimuths 440 and 180 occurs at the end of the inclinometry sequence.
    • You may check TCS or AEC screens for current azimuth : nominal end is az=439 (CW) or az=10 (CCW or CW+CCW)
    • You may disable drives if daywork is to commence immediately. The data loss is recoverable.
    • Please contact Iain Coulson or the TSS by phone or email, as appropriate.

  • Anyone in Hilo wanting remote access to the antenna and suspecting inclinometry in progress
    • check tasks for incline
    • check tcs_mon for current azimuth
    • contact WL for permission to access JCMT remotely
    • kill incline task if desired access overrides inclinometry

If inclinometry is to be attempted remotely, please follow the full protocols
