LUNCH TALK

Wednesday 10 April at 12:30pm

John Davies - ROE/ATC

"Is Pluto a Planet?????"

ABSTRACT: "Yes, or then again maybe not. In this popular level talk I will outline how Pluto came to be discovered and why, some 70 years later, the planetary staus of Pluto is being debated. Along the way we will learn a little about comets, the Kuiper belt of distant asteroids and the ironies of how things get to be named the way they are. So, some science, some history, lots of pictures, NO MATHS. A short technical session with an update on recent developments in the Kuiper Belt can be held at the end if the scientists want to get down to the nitty gritty."
