Michele Pestalozzi - Onsala Space Observatory
"Methanol Masers in the Northern Hemisphere"
ABSTRACT: "At the Onsala Space Observatory we have performed a consistent
and extensive survey of the galactic plane, searching for methanol masers
at 6.7 GHz. This masing transition of CH3OH is known to be one
of the most reliable tracer for massive star formation regions, together
with other signposts like OH and H2O masers as well as strong
IR sources, often listed as Ultra Compact (UC) HII regions. After having
covered more than 50 square degrees of sky, our search has revealed 11 detections,
5 of them new. Some of these do not seem to have any listed IRAS counterpart.
We have conducted follow-up observations using various instruments and resolutions
in order to identify the new sources (the observations at SCUBA are part
of the follow-up). From these studies we can conclude that methanol masers
appear at the very beginning of the formation of a massive star. In this
short presentation I will give an overview of the Onsala survey, concentrating
then on a couple of particular cases."
