Abstract 20030214 De Breuck

Carlos De Breuck - Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris

"Dust and Gas in and around High Redshift Radio Galaxies"

ABSTRACT: "High redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) are amongst the most massive galaxies known out to z=5.2. I will talk about our search for the most distant radio galaxies. Next, I will give an overview of our efforts to detect CO emission from z>3 radio galaxies using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. We have already detected the CO (4-3) line in two additional radio galaxies. We find that in at least half of the cases, the CO lines are very close in velocity space to associated HI absorption seen in the Lya lines, suggesting they originate from the same gas reservoir. These reservoirs may be feeding the massive starbursts powering the thermal dust emission. Finally, I will briefly talk about our multi-wavelength observations of a proto-cluster surrounding the z=4.1 radio galaxy TN J1338-1942. We have obtained a wide-field 1.3mm map using MAMBO at the IRAM 30m telescope, and have found 3 to 6 companion objects, identified using our deep 1.4GHz VLA map and VLT R-band images. We intend to constrain the redshifts by obtaining SCUBA 850/450 um photometry to determine if these sources are dusty star-forming members of the proto-cluster."

Following the seminar, there will be a short (15min) "pre-observing-run" presentation by Catherine Garland (UH - IfA) on her observing plans entitled "The Neutral ISM in Luminous Blue Compact Galaxies", in the JAC seminar room at 2:30pm.
