"Galactic and Magnetic Properties of the MSX Infrared-Dark
Clouds"
ABSTRACT: "The MSX infrared-dark clouds (IRDCs) are an interesting selection
of molecular clouds containing dense, cold gas and dust. Many of the clouds
are filamentary, and the filaments are often fragmented into chains of cores.
Although these objects are reminiscent of the Integral-Shaped Filament (ISF)
in Orion A, they include objects with quite different properties. In this
talk I will discuss the physical properties of G11.11-0.12 and G81.50+0.14
as representatives of two quite distinct classes of IRDCs. The first appears
to be supported by a poloidally dominant magnetic field, a configuration
that is unique amongst the molecular clouds studied to date. The second
is misnamed - it is a void with a real IRDC on its rim! I will also deal
briefly with our efforts to address the selection effects that lead to anomalies
like G81.50+0.14."
