Gerald Moriarty Schieven - JAC

"Venus In Transit"

ABSTRACT: "Gaze toward the west just after sunset and you'll see the brightest jewel of the sky, the Evening Star, the planet Venus. In contrast to its mythological name, Venus is a hellish world of acid clouds and glowing rocks. On June 8, Venus passes directly between the earth and the sun (a Transit of Venus), a rare event which last occurred in 1882, but which, sadly, will not be visible from Hawaii.

In this "popular-level" talk, we'll explore earth's "sister" world, learn what a transit is and why they are much more than just a curiosity, and delve into some of the history of expeditions around the globe (including to Hawaii) to view these rare events.

All are welcome to attend."
