The Vega Phenomenon down to the Substellar Limit: Jumping on the AU Microscopii Bandwagon

ABSTRACT: The recent discovery of a debris disk around the M dwarf AU Microscopii has shifted the focus of the search for planetary systems to low mass stars as never before. Since M dwarfs comprise 85% of the stellar population by number, their ability to form planetesimals impacts greatly the abundance of planetary systems. I will present the discovery data of AU Mic's disk and present some of the followup to those JCMT data. I will also present proposed observations with the JCMT, Gemini, VLBA and GBT which concentrate on identifying disks and planets in the low-mass stellar population.
