Ground-based Cassini Support with Infrared Observations of Saturn's Aurora

ABSTRACT: The APL group, part of University College London, is undertaking a long-term observing program of Saturn's infrared aurora in support of both the MAG and CAPS instruments on Cassini. Through the use of both medium and high-resolution spectroscopy, we are measuring both the auroral intensity and thermal structure, and most importantly the ion wind speeds. We are part of a wide community of scientists involved in the current Cassini mission, and have been able to correlate our results with those of the Cassini instruments, as well as recent UV observations using the Hubble Space Telescope, in order to make significant advances in the understanding of Saturn's ionospheric-magnetospheric system.
