"Filling the gap between stars and planets:
the formation history of galactic brown dwarfs"

ABSTRACT: We present new strategies for the identification and characterisation of benchmark brown dwarfs, with known ages and metallicities, in the Galactic disk. We seek such objects in young clusters and star-forming regions, and as companions to subgiants and white dwarfs. We propose to use these benchmarks to construct an empirical calibration scheme which will be used to constrain the disk substellar initial mass function and brown dwarf formation history from the unprecedentedly large samples of new brown dwarfs expected from the UKIDSS Large Area and Galactic Cluster surveys.
