"Large scale extinction mapping"
ABSTRACT: This talk will give an overview of the star counting
and colour excess method to map the distribution of dust.
Intrinsically those techniques can be described as 'embarrassingly
parallel' problems and are hence ideally suited for large scale
computer clusters and Grid environments. I will present results of
several applications of star counting and colour excess methods in
conjunction with 2MASS data. These include: a) Investigations of
triggered star formation in IC1396; b) A 14400 square degree
relative extinction map of the entire Galactic Plane; c) The
determination of the reddening law in dark clouds and systematic
errors in all colour excess methods; d) A systematic search for
new Galactic star clusters and the identification of the most
probable missing globular clusters in the Milky Way.
