"Carbon stars and the evolving interstellar medium"
ABSTRACT: "The results are presented from a JCMT survey of nearby
carbon stars. We detected 12CO and 13CO J=2-1 emission from all the high
mass-loss objects (visible from Hawaii) within 1 kpc of the Sun. These
stars pump 13C-rich material into the local interstellar medium, and dominate
its changing abundances. The JCMT data have resolved the discrepancy between
the solar 12C/13C abundance ratio and the values found in nearby interstellar
clouds."
