How to run CGS4

These are very brief instructions on how to run CGS4 at the UKIRT. For more detailed instructions, or, if you have any questions about CGS4, please contact Tom Kerr.

ON IRTCON:

  1. Log in using the observer account and start a decterm - at this stage, you could also log onto IRTUKT from the vt330 terminal with the same username and password. On this terminal, you can run UKIRT_PREP to edit your configs and execs.

  2. Start a decterm from the applications menu,  drag this decterm to the bottom of the screen, and in it, type `cgs4_dev'.

  3. When the software has loaded, go into the startup menu, turn on the blackbody and then datum the motors - while doing this you should startup the data reduction on KIKI - see below.

  4. PF1 out of this menu, and then go into `spectroscopy'.

  5. Run the exec `array_tests' which should be the default option in the `load_an_exec' menu (load_an_exec and then run...).

  6. Now you can load your own execs and run them.

  7. If you want to do single observations (e.g., flats & arcs), or take movies, you need to choose `set_single_observation' and enter your config name. Then, either choose `movie' to take movies, or `run...' to actually take data.

  8. At the end of the night, run the exec `end_night'and turn off the blackbody. You do not have to datum the motors. It will ask you if you want to kill the motors as it's running down. Answer yes to this.

ON KIKI:

  1. Log in using your guest account.

  2. Start an xterm.

  3. Run up the dr system with the command `cgs4dr_ukirt'.

  4. To reduce data, make sure that the data reduction is running in the mission control window.

  5. Once dr is running, the array tests will be automatically reduced. Once observation 6 has been reduced, you should run `array_tests' in the Red4 window. Have a look at the value for the double correlated read noise.

  6. Default data reduction configs are loaded automatically when the `array_tests' exec is completed. However, if you have your own data reduction configs, they can be called up from within the dr system. Do this after you've run `array_tests' by restoring your config in the cred4 window, and also your plotting config in the plot4 window.

  7. To run down the dr system at the end of the night, click on the `file' menu found on most of the dr windows and choose exit.
