UKIRT DOCUMENTATION - Checklist for visiting observers

This is a checklist specifically intended for visiting observers as they prepare to execute observations under the UKIRT flexible scheduling process. It is not an exhaustive documentation list; for that, see the "User Documentation" link under the "Observing at UKIRT" page. It is assumed here that you are familiar with the flexible scheduling regime and that you have read the "required reading" listed on the above page. Your support scientist will take a variable amount of time in the following reviews, depending upon your familiarity with the systems concerned.

Before arriving in Hilo, you should be familiar with the following (this will generally be the case because you will have submitted MSBs to the database before arriving):

BEFORE ARRIVING IN HILO
Observing tool startup and basic windows
Observing tool UKIRT science libraries
MSBs, inheritance and administrative components such as site quality and scheduling constraints
Use of the position editor and acquisition scenarios depending on your guide star and astrometry
Documenting your program for future observers
Known bugs in the OT

Before you leave Hilo to go to Hale Pohaku, you and your support astronomer should have reviewed at least the following:

BEFORE LEAVING  FOR HP
Flexing: general philosophy, rules etc.
The UKIRT flex queue: what may come up during your run, brief programme descriptions.
Query tool startup and conditions specification
Selecting and executing MSBs
The Sequence Console; how to control it and understand its contents (optional; some support scientists will do this at the summit)
Data reduction pipeline, stopping, starting, controlling frames to reduce, optional flags (optional; some support scientists will do this at the summit)
ompobslog for documenting the observing night (please do this, particularly for observing from the Queue; but also for your own programme, whose observations will end up in the UKIRT archive).
Accounting: properly accepting and rejecting MSBs
Project tracking: the various OMP pages for tracking project status

Before you go to the summit, you and your support astronomer should have reviewed at least the following:

BEFORE GOING TO THE SUMMIT

Safety: your support astronomer will give you a briefing on summit safety, the Hawaii no-smoking law etc.

Once at the summit (and before observing begins) you should expect to go over the following:

AT THE SUMMIT
Safety walkaround: review of safety equipment locations, emergency exits etc.  (for recent or frequent visitors, recent changes still need be covered; so inform your support scientist of the date of your most recent visit).
The Sequence Console: how to control it and understand its contents
Data reduction pipeline: stopping, starting, controlling frames to reduce, optional flags
Night logging:
  • array tests at start
  • weather at sunset
  • conditions and decision making in queue mode through the night
  • commenting accept/reject (especially reject)

Most of the above areas are documented fully in the "Preparation and Execution" and "Observing, logging and feedback" documentation available from the "Observing at UKIRT" page.  The data reduction pipeline is documented in the "Online Data Reduction" document linked to from the same place.
