Finder charts for use at the summit may be emailed as attachments to
ukirt-finders
(at) jach.hawaii.edu
The "Subject:" field must include (anywhere) your
project ID in square brackets,
in the usual OMP format: [u/<semester>/<n>]
- if not, the message will be deleted. This is not case sensitive; [U/07B/58] and [u/07b/58] are both valid ways to
give the same project ID. Finder images should be attached to the
email; the body can be left blank. Multiple files can be attached to a
single email and will be handled separately.
File formats and size limit
Your charts will be accessed at the summit using a web browser and
should not require translation or plugins to view. Acceptable file
formats therefore include jpg, png,
gif. Postscript is unacceptable, and we prefer that you do not
use pdf files. Where
necessary, please take a simple screen shot of images in another format
and save as one of the preferred formats listed above. The system will
silently delete any attachment which exceeds 100kbyte in size.
Guidelines
To avoid confusion at the summit, we ask that the following guidelines
be adhered to:
- File naming: File names
must be all one string (no spaces), with the first part of the string
defining the target name and the final part of the string (after a
mandatory underscore) defining the waveband of the image (either by
name or by wavelength in decimal microns with "um" appended).
- Target names: must match
exactly those used in your MSBs.
- Image information: You must include at least (i) North and
East arrows (ii) a scale bar or other indication of scale of the image
and (iii) an indication of where in the image your target lies.
Some examples of valid file names (note - no spaces, no
non-alphanumerics apart from underscores):
FRS1350_V.png
Elias_2_16_K.gif
M104_2.2um.jpg
And some Invalid
file names:
FRS1350.png
(no waveband information)
Elias 2 16_K.gif
(spaces in the file name)
M104_2.2.jpg (no
trailing "um" after the wavelength)
Example Chart
Here, with thanks to E Whelan, is an example of a finder chart which
gets everything right (clear indication of scale, clear indication of
the target, east and north indicated).
