Linear Polarimetry with UFTI

Linear polarisation in GSS30

During commissioning of polarimetry with UFTI, this image of the star forming region around GSS30 (left) was obtained. Taken through a narrow band molecular hydrogen filter, remarkably, the image shows that not only is the scattered light from GSS30 polarised, but also the emission from the Herbig-Haro object HH 313. The arrow indicates the direction of the (unseen) jet that drives the HH shock front. The lengths of the vectors indicate the strength of the polarisation.
