Linear Polarimetry with UFTI

During commissioning of polarimetry with UFTI, this image of the star forming region around GSS30 (left) was obtained. Taken through a narrow band molecular hydrogen filter, remarkably, the image shows that not only is the scattered light from GSS30 polarised, but also the emission from the Herbig-Haro object HH 313. The arrow indicates the direction of the (unseen) jet that drives the HH shock front. The lengths of the vectors indicate the strength of the polarisation. Courtesy: Chris Davis and Ant Chrysostomou.
