2.2. Galaxies, AGN and Cosmology

Aragon-Salamanca (Durham) undertook J and K imaging with IRCAM3 of H$\alpha$ selected cluster galaxies to determine the star-formation history and spatial distribution of the underlying stellar population. 105 galaxies in the programme were observed in consistently photometric conditions and good seeing.

Veilleux (UH) undertook observations of ultraluminous infrared galaxies to search for broad Pa$\alpha$ and/or [Si IV] emission which are signs of quasar activity. This programme used the 40l/mm grating in CGS4.

Smail and Ivison (Durham, UCL) and Barger (IFA Hawaii) carried out a continuing series of surveys involving deep J/K imaging of fields containing 850 µm sources selected from the Scuba Cluster Lens Survey. This programme has continued into the UFTI era, with results comparable in resolution and depth to Keck and HST NICMOS. CGS4 followup has revealed the highest-redshift SCUBA galaxy yet known (z=2.81).
