THE UNITED KINGDOM INFRARED TELESCOPE
ANNUAL REPORT
2001-2002

Appendix B: Time Allocations

UKIRT PATT time continued to be oversubscribed. The ratio of the total number of nights requested to the number of nights allocated was 2.1, 2.1, 2.0 and 1.6 in semesters 01A, 01B, 02A and 02B, respectively. 02A was affected by the delayed delivery of UIST (see Chapter 4.2.) and was shortened by 15 nights; 02B was lengthened by 15 nights. The subscription figure for 02A represents the original requests for time and number of science nights available, i.e. as if UIST had been available.

The tables below show successful proposals grouped by instrument and science. The tables include proposals from the PATT, University of Hawaii and, for semester 02B, the Japanese communities; where a proposal requested more than one instrument these have been given equal weight in the first table. For semester 02A these numbers refer to the actual use of the telescope time, i.e. without the availability of UIST.

The following pages list the titles of, and principal investigators for, successful applications in each semester. Note that although only the principal investigator is given, in nearly every case the projects are collaborative efforts. For semester 02A the projects include only those able to use the telescope without UIST. Starting in 02B, 10 nights of telescope time per semester is awarded to the Japanese astronomical community in exchange for the Japanese contributions to WFCAM (see Chapter 5). The University of Hawaii continue to receive 15% of UKIRT time as part of the agreement of use for the Mauna Kea site.
