ANNUAL REPORT
2001-2002

3.2. Telescope Usage

The following table summarizes telescope usage for semesters 01A, 01B, 02A and 02B, covering the period February 1, 2001 to January 31, 2003.

Semester 01A 01B 02A 02B
Total Number of Nights 184.4 183.5 157.7 181.0
Eng. and Commissioning Time 28.3 30.8 13.2 32.0
Science Nights 156.1 152.7 144.5 149.1
Science Nights Observed 79.5% 71.6% 66.5% 75.3%
Science Nights Lost to Faults 2.6% 1.5% 5.0% 6.3%
Science Nights Lost to Weather 20.5% 26.9% 30.0% 19.7%

The fault rate was unusually high in 2002. In semester 02A an entire night was lost to a fault with the UFTI controller, complicated by communication problems. This semester also suffered losses associated with MICHELLE (which was still in shared-risk mode) and IRPOL. In semester 02B two complete nights were lost to two separate telescope faults -- a drive connector and a mirror support valve failed. There were also faults associated with MICHELLE, UFTI and UIST (in shared-risk mode), in UFTI's case again compounded by communication problems.
