UKIRT Annual Report 2003-2004

THE UNITED KINGDOM INFRARED TELESCOPE
ANNUAL REPORT 2003-2004

Appendix B: Time Allocations

Semesters 03A and 03B were normal-length semesters, except that semester 03A ended a month early for realuminisation of the primary. CGS4, UFTI and UIST were available. Due to changes in the WFCAM delivery schedule (see Chapter 4), semesters 04A and 04B merged into one semester which ran from January 16th to September 26th 2004, at which point UKIRT was closed for WFCAM commissioning. Between February and April 2004 Michelle was offered; CGS4 was only available when Michelle was not, as they share the same port. Between January and March 2004 UIST was not available due to a cryogenic problem followed by planned engineering (see Section 3.4). A call for UFTI backup proposals was issued at that time.

UKIRT PATT time continued to be oversubscribed by about a factor of two. The ratio of the total number of nights requested to the number of nights allocated ranged between 1.7 and 2.3.

Figure 12: UKIRT PATT time oversubscription factor.

The tables below show successful PATT proposals grouped by instrument and science; where a proposal requested more than one instrument these have been given equal weight in the first table.

PATT TIME AWARDED BY INSTRUMENT

PATT TIME AWARDED BY SCIENTIFIC CATEGORY
  03A 03B 2004
Subject     Number       %     Number       %     Number       %
Extragalactic 16 45.7 18 48.6 27 38.6
Galactic 18 51.4 18 48.6 41 58.6
Solar System 1 2.9 1 2.7 2 2.8

We list below the titles of, and principal investigators for, successful applications in each semester. Note that although only the principal investigator is given, in nearly every case the projects are collaborative efforts. Up to ten nights of telescope time per semester is awarded to the Japanese astronomical community in exchange for the Japanese contributions to WFCAM. The University of Hawaii continues to receive 15% of UKIRT time as part of the agreement of use for the Mauna Kea site.
