Semester 08B (01-Aug-2008 to 31-Jan-2009)
08B
is a split-mode semester: Cassegrain (Aug 2008, Dec 2008-Jan
2009), Wide Field (Sep - Nov 2008)
Please check the instrumentation section of the UKIRT 08B Call
for Proposals for details of instrument scheduling in the coming
semester.
NOTE - PLEASE SEE THE "URGENT"
NEWS ITEM ON THE UKIRT HOME PAGE FOR INFORMATION REGARDING THE STFC
PROGRAMMATIC REVIEW AND ITS EFFECT ON UKIRT SEMESTERS 08A AND 08B. THE
PAGE WILL BE UPDATED AS THE SITUATION CHANGES.
All applications for UKIRT time
must be made electronically, using the new NorthStar proposal submission &
refereeing system. Submissions
using the old ING LaTeX Stylefile/AAO system will no longer be accepted.
If you have an existing user
account for the UKIRT Service Programme's Northstar system, you can use
it and do not need to set up a new account.
UKIRT is flexibly
scheduled. See here
for details. The panel will make a
decision on
who the observers for the flexible schedule should be, and if
proposers
wish to influence that decision, they should address the point clearly
in
the technical case. You will be asked to
indicate your requirements in terms of seeing,
atmospheric
water vapour and cloud cover. Please make sure that you do specify
these
quantities, which will be
used in scheduling your observations.
Information on observing conditions at UKIRT is available here.
A description of the statistical behaviour of CSO tau over a period of
some
years, and a comparison between photometric time and water vapour, is
available here.
DEADLINES
FOR SUBMISSION
Semester A - end of 15 September Hawaiian
Standard Time.
Semester B - end of 15 March Hawaiian Standard Time. |
The NorthStar
interface
allows you to generate your whole proposal electronically, and embed
one-page PDFs containing science and technical cases.
Instructions on user
registration and proposal preparation are available here (needs link). Any general
queries about this process should be addressed to ukirtscheduler@jach.hawaii.edu.
Your proposal has not been submitted successfully until the
system has e-mailed you
a reference number.
If you experience technical issues or need to check for confirmation of
submission, please contact the
ukirt scheduler.
A short primer showing screen shots of the system is linked to at
the end of this page. When preparing to submit a proposal, the
following points should be noted in particular:
1. Preparation of PDF files for
science
and/or technical cases
See the hints and tips here.
2. File lengths and formats
We strongly prefer the use of PDF files for both science and
technical
cases, and for a figure/reference page, if needed.
Note that we insist on the 3 page limit
for ordinary
proposals
(1 page science, 1 page technical feasibility and 1 page of figures). We
will strictly enforce this limit. If you are applying for long term
status, then please indicate this in your application using the
appropriate radio button option.
If you are seeking large amounts of time, you should also note this
using the approriate indicatior, and you may be allowed to submit extra
material with prior permission from the TAG chair (currently Joana Oliveira). Any such
additional supporting materials should be sent separately by e-mail to
the ukirt scheduler,
but the form itself should be submitted using the standard NorthStar interface.
3. Preview frequently, and check
your proposal before
submitting
The NorthStar system permits you to view
the resultant PDF
proposal at most stages during its preparation, and this is
recommended. It is in your own
interests to ensure that your proposal conforms to the standard
formatting and length requirements.
4. Fonts
The UKIRT TAG (in common with all the
other PATT TAGs) insist
on
a font of 11pt or larger. Please bear this in mind when preparing
science and technical cases. If using LaTeX to prepare your proposal,
then the use of the template text provided in the
PDF hints
and tips page will ensure that this requirement
is observed.
5. Browser Problems
If you have problems with your browser in
dealing with NorthStar, it
may
be that you are not using one of the tested browsers. If this is the
case, then we can only really suggest that you use a suitable browser
instead.
The system is compatible with
Mozilla-based browsers and
Microsoft Internet Explorer. Other browsers have not been exhaustively
tested with
this
form, and we note that the Apple Safari browser is not explicitly
supported,
so the Mac OS X version of Firefox will be a more reliable option.
In the event of submission problems,
please let us know what exactly
feedback you
get if submission fails.
