JAC Funding Extended to 2013

JAC Funding Extended to 2013

Three agencies provide operational funding to the Joint Astronomy Centre: STFC (United Kingdom), NRC (Canada) and NWO (Netherlands). The James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) is a partnership between these three agencies, whereas the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) is funded exclusively by STFC.

It is my great pleasure to announce that the three funding agencies have agreed to extend their operational support for a further year, to 31st March 2013, at the current budget level. This is excellent news for the observatory staff and for the JCMT and UKIRT user communities.

Both telescopes will benefit from the extension of support. For the JCMT, the SCUBA-2 instrument is currently being commissioned and its on-sky performance will be firmly established within the next few months; contingent on the outcome of this, discussions towards a longer-term extension of JCMT operations will ensue over the remainder of 2011. For UKIRT, the extension will allow continued observations with the Wide-Field Camera, WFCAM, and for some ongoing international initiatives to play out, potentially leading to a new funding model for the observatory.

Further announcements will be made following meetings of the two telescope Boards in early June.
