VISITING INSTRUMENT PERSONNEL: SAFETY GUIDELINES

Your JAC contact person is also your Safety Officer.
Please
have them review the following with you, with reference to the JAC
Safety
Manual, to ensure your compliance with JAC's safety policies.
BUILDING SAFETY
- How to sign in
- Which areas of building/observatory are off
limits
- How to use the phone system(s)
- How to use the alarm system (Hilo only)
- Working alone
- Two-person rule
- Who is responsible for your safety (JAC contact
person, Telescope
System Specialist (TSS), etc.)
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
- Fire
- Medical
- Locations of emergency equipment
- High altitude symptoms
SHOP/LAB SAFETY
- Only authorised personnel may operate equipment
such as forklifts,
cranes, jib hoists, lathes, drill press, milling machines, etc.
- Laser use (no Class 4 lasers are allowed)
- Use of proper personal protective equipment
(PPE)
(cryogens
- protective eyewear)
- Chemicals (visitors may not bring chemicals
into
any JAC
facility without a proper MSDS and prior approval by the Site Safety
Advisor
or Chief Engineer)
- All "below the hook lifting equipment" must be
approved by
the Site Safety Advisor or Chief Engineer.
- No food or drinks in the posted labs.
- Visitors are strongly encouraged to wear safety
shoes while
in JAC summit facilities.
TELESCOPE SAFETY
- 14 hour rule
- Use of proper lock-out procedures
VEHICLE SAFETY (No
Sightseeing
Tours)
- Mauna Kea Vehicle Procedures Checklist
- Driving on the saddle road and on the Mauna Kea
summit road
is the most dangerous part of our work here at the JAC. Please drive
with
care and follow the posted speed limits.
- Report damage or odd behavior/handling to
"vehicle" (see email address in JAC
Eyes Only)
DAYWORK PROCEDURES
- Approved safety shoes are highly recommended for all activities
above
HP
other than normal observing.
- Telescope System Specialist/Work Leader (TSS/WL) will coordinate
all
work
at summit facilities
- Check in with TSS/WL immediately upon entering the telescope
- Sign daywork book

To all visiting instrument personnel:
Please complete the following questionnaire. If you
answer
yes to any of these questions, you must contact your JAC support person
to follow-up on the JAC safety policies that address them.
- Will you require approved safety shoes?
- Will you be using any lasers (JAC or Your Own)?
- Will you be using any compressed gases?
- Will you be using any cryogenic liquids?
- Will you be using any chemicals? (e.g.
lubricants,
solvents,
glues, hazardous materials)
- Will you be using any portable power tools?
- Will you require the use of any machine shop
equipment?
- Will you require the use of any welding
equipment?
- Will you require the use of any lifting
equipment?
(e.g.
forklift, jib hoist, crane)
- Will you be using any below the hook rigging or
lifting devices?
(e.g. slings, chain slings)
- Will you be providing any lifting brackets on
our
equipment?
- Will you be manually handling large
equipment/boxes/components?
- Will you require any special electrical systems?
- Does any of your equipment create sound above
85dBA?
- Will you be using any radioactive materials?
- Will you be using any ladders?
- Will you require access to the antenna backing
structure?
- Will you be doing any soldering?
- Does your equipment create any known safety hazards?
