JAC
Safety Summary Sheet
(for
visitors of less than 2 months'
duration)
You should have a JAC contact person (normally the JAC Visitor
Coordinator) who will give you a safety
briefing
- check with them about safety issues. If you are not sure who your
contact
person is, check with the receptionist.
FIRE:
If you hear the fire alarm, evacuate the building and convene
outside.
Follow JAC staff to the emergency assembly area. If you find a fire:
- Raise the alarm and start evacuation
- Contact 911 (at the summit this can be left
until later)
- Do not fight the fire
- Do not re-enter the building unless the okay is
given by a JAC
staff
member.
WORKSHOPS:
Stay out of the mechanical workshops at JCMT and UKIRT unless
explicitly
told you may enter by a JAC staff member. If you enter the JAC shops,
stay
within the yellow lines and follow the footwear policy noted in Chapter
8 Section A3a of the JAC Safety Manual.
HIGH ALTITUDE SAFETY:
Get a briefing from JAC contact person. If visiting the
summit
facilities (UKIRT/JCMT), call the telescope before you leave Hale
Pohaku
and clear with the TSS or WL. Be aware of the symptoms and actions for
altitude sickness (yellow card and red card). The TSS/WL is responsible
for safety at the summit so you must follow their safety instructions
at
all times.
VEHICLES:
If you are driving a JAC vehicle you should be aware of the
rules
governing
their use. See Addendum 8 - Mauna Kea
Vehicle
Procedures Checklist
Note: The Safety Manual is available on the web via
the
JAC homepage, but your contact person should be your primary source of
safety information.
