General Information

Arrival

Your support astronomer will make sure you have:
  • an account on the public machines
  • his/her contact information (phone numbers, office number)
  • combinations for the vehicle lock box and the various buildings at Hale Pohaku.  (http://www.jach.hawaii.edu/admin/private/Policies/HPCombinations.html Note: this page is password protected and only JAC staff can access it. )
  • electronic key for long-term visitors of the JAC building in Hilo
If you plan to arrive out of hours, you should contact your support astronomer in advance for instructions on how to get to the JAC and get the keys to your car.

Forms

Observers should, if possible, leave signed paperwork (Medical alert disclaimer form, TBD) with Reception. If this is not possible then in extremis it is acceptable to fax down from the summit.

Information for visitors

All visitors entering JAC buildings, grounds, or facilities must comply with applicable health and safety policies and procedures.

Visiting observers are issued a standard packet of information whose contents include the following safety related information:
    • Registration on arrival
    • Use of JAC Vehicles
    • JAC Policy on Stays at High Altitude
    • Operating Instructions for JAC Vehicles
    • Medical Alert Waiver
    • Red and yellow emergency cards

Food at Hale Pohaku:

Please inform your Support Scientist of any special dietary requirements or food allergies you might have (even if you have specified them in the Accommodation Request Form). As a precaution, make sure that you remind the cooks about your requirements/allergies BEFORE you pick up your food.

WORKSHOPS:

Stay out of the mechanical workshops at JCMT, UKIRT, and JAC Hilo office unless you are accompanied by a JAC staff member. If you need to enter the mechanical workshops, your JAC staff contact will advise on the proper safety procedures.
