Here is the twenty third round of modifications made to the JAC Safety Manual as per the JAC Safety Committee Meeting of 20-July-05.  Note: Modifications to the front and back covers will appear in the hard copy versions only.

- remove: Note:  When personalizing hard hats, use name tags instead of permanent markers.  The ink in the permanent markers may hide defects in the hard hats.
-add new: "j. Any hard hats with markings or stickers that prevent inspection for
defects or damage will be removed from service and disposed of."

Compressed Gases, Cryogenic Liquids, Vacuum Equipment
A.3.a
- remove "properly": a. Compressed gas cylinders must be secured at all times so they cannot fall. Storage on properly approved hand trucks satisfies this requirement.

- remove 1st sentence: Acetylene is shipped in a cylinder packed with a porous mass material, and a liquid solvent, commonly acetone.  Do not store or transport acetylene cylinders on their side, as this causes the acetylene to become less stable and unsafe.

- add to sentence: The valve safety covers must be left on the cylinders until cylinders are secured to walls, benches, or stable pieces of equipment and are required for use.

- Policy and Purpose: add exclusion clause to following: "All glass containers used in vacuum work or which are under vacuum themselves must be securely and adequately taped or shielded to restrain flying glass in the event of an implosion or other accident. It should be noted that cryostat windows are a particular case where the risk of implosion exists but cannot be protected against as described herein.  Such equipment shall only be maintained by knowledgeable and skilled staff fully briefed on the risks.
