Table of contents Update revision dates
1 C4 table
- change Forklift Training to "Every 3 years"
reason: change in regulations
1 H (new) add: Most Stringent Rules for Visitors

JAC Safety guidelines have been carefully drawn up with the aim of ensuring that staff work in a safe manner without excessive requirements - going to another site does not change any of the premises upon which the guidelines are based and in particular does not give any sort of "holiday from risk". Staff should therefore abide by JAC standards wherever it is possible to do so.

2 D Replace introductory sentence with the following:

"Small earth quakes are common on the Big Island, and that should not be allowed to engender a casual approach to seismic damage. The island is amongst the most seismically active regions in the World and the potential for severe earthquakes (magnitude 7 +) is significant. Despite significant efforts to predict them, major earthquakes typically strike without warning. To minimize injury follow these rules:"

6 A4 - add Hydrogen Sulfide & Carbon Monoxide to List of Hazardous Substances
8 B3a
- B3a: Forklift training - change a & b to the following; then b becomes c:
  1. All operators must successfully complete a forklift training course, which includes formal training (video and written test), practical training (practical exercises) and evaluation (operators performance in the workplace).
  2. Refresher training will be conducted at least every three years; or when necessary, i.e. if the following occur:
  • an operator is involved in an accident or near-miss accident
  • an operator has been observed operating the vehicle in an unsafe manner
  • an operator has been determined to need additional training as a result of an evaluation
  • an operator is assigned to a different type of truck there are changes in the workplace that could affect the safe operation of the truck

5. Motor Vehicle Accident and Breakdown Procedures

c. Report Accident/Breakdown

9 K5d (new before towing) Staff stranded at night.

The first recourse if a JAC vehicle breaks down in the night is to summon assistance using the cellular phone. Portable phones are provided at HP for staff or visitors who are worried about the possibility of complete electrical failure in the vehicle. Staff should use common sense in determining whether it's safer to wait in the vehicle until another vehicle passes by, or attempt to walk, leaving the vehicle clearly marked as a hazard for other road users. Decisions should take account of the time of night, weather conditions and suitable clothing.
