JAC Health and Safety Manual - Synopsis of Emergency Instruction

JCMT / UKIRT

BASIC EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

FIRE

  1. To alert people in the observatories of a fire:
    • Activate the nearest fire alarm pull station
  2. Use a fire extinguisher only if this can be done without risk.
  3. As far as possible, check that all personnel have been evacuated.
    • Do not attempt to rescue others trapped by the fire.
  4. Call 911 and Site Safety Advisor (Be aware that the purpose for calling 911 is mainly to alert the fire department of the fire and to acquire rescue assistance. Because of limited access, fire fighting vehicles are not normally able to access the summit.)
  5. If you hear the fire alarm evacuate to the fire assembly area.
    • JCMT - to the CSO parking area
    • UKIRT - to the UH 88" telescope entrance

MEDICAL

  1. Do primary assessment, tap and shout "ARE YOU OKAY"
  2. Yell for help. Call 911.
  3. Continue primary assessment and render first aid.
  4. Specify transportation requirements with consideration to the degree of emergency
    • helicopter (call 911)
    • EEV (arrange rendezvous site with Emergency Medical Services (EMS))
    • JAC vehicle (arrange rendezvous site with EMS)
