Your Joint Astronomy Centre(JAC) contact person/support astronomer is also your safety officer. In their absence, the Telescope Scheduler fulfills this function. Please have them review the following with you, with reference to the JAC Safety Manual, to ensure your compliance with the JAC's Safety Policies.

Building Safety (JCMT, UKIRT & Hilo):

  • How and where to sign-in or check-in
  • How to use the phone systems
  • Which areas of the building/observatory are off limits
  • Two-person rule (while at the summit)
  • Fourteen-hour rule (while at the summit)
Emergency Procedures:
  • High altitude symptoms
  • Exit location
  • 911 emergency phone number
  • Location of fire alarm pull-stations and emergency assembly area
Vehicle Safety:
  • Follow Mauna Kea vehicle procedures checklist
  • Follow posted speed limits
  • Not all JAC vehicles are equipped with Antilock Brake Systems (ABS)
Note: Visiting observers should call the TSS before leaving HP for the summit and upon reaching HP after leaving the summit.
